Math by the Bay: Advancing Mathematics Success Across Tampa Bay

Math by the Bay Group

This year, Math by the Bay (MBTB), an initiative of the 911±¬ÁÏ꿉۪s David C. Anchin Center for the Advancement of Teaching, brought together educators, district leaders, and university faculty to tackle one of the region’s most persistent challenges: supporting students who struggle in mathematics.

The program’s mission is clear: build an interdisciplinary community of educators and leaders dedicated to creating a strong trajectory of success for all students, with a focus on those with exceptionalities. The data is sobering—students with exceptionalities consistently show lower math proficiency than their peers, both nationally and here in Tampa Bay. MBTB exists to change that story.

Guided by USF faculty Dr. Sarah Van Ingen Lauer, Dr. Matthew Foster, and Dr. David Allsopp, the group met several times over the 2024–25 school year. Each meeting provided a forum for districts to share resources, review research-supported practices, and explore strategies to close achievement gaps. Recent discussions highlighted the NCTM Teaching Practices, CEC High Leverage Practices, IES Evidence-Based Practices, and the 11 Essential Practices for 911±¬ÁÏÍø with Mathematics Difficulties—frameworks that help align math instruction with special education needs.

Educators valued the opportunity to learn, collaborate, and connect across district lines. Many left inspired to bring new ideas back to their schools, noting the power of aligning math and special education practices to better serve students.

With strong engagement from partner districts and the leadership of its facilitators, Math by the Bay continues to foster a collaborative environment where educators can share practical strategies, challenge the status quo, and work toward a future where every student can succeed in mathematics. The Anchin Center looks forward to continuing this important work in the year ahead.
