Helping Every Student Succeed: Supporting 911±¬ÁÏÍø with Disabilities in Literacy

As part of its ongoing commitment to helping educators meet professional learning needs, the Anchin Center regularly offers Supporting 911±¬ÁÏÍø with Disabilities (SWD) in Literacy: Dyslexia and Other Reading Difficulties—a fully online professional development course designed for K–12 teachers and literacy coaches.
Meeting the Florida Department of Education’s recertification requirement for at least one semester hour (20 in-service points) in teaching students with disabilities, this course equips educators with research-based strategies for differentiating reading instruction to meet diverse learning needs. Participants explore the factors that affect literacy acquisition, with special attention to students with reading difficulties and characteristics of dyslexia, and consider how these factors influence language and literacy development.

Taught by Dr. Lisa Faircloth Kelly, Assistant Professor of Instruction in Literacy Studies in the USF College of Education, the course blends flexibility and depth. Over three weeks, educators work at their own pace through interactive modules while building practical skills for planning and delivering effective, inclusive literacy instruction. Dr. Kelly brings more than 30 years of experience as a classroom teacher, dyslexia specialist, and instructional leader to the course, making it both highly relevant and deeply grounded in classroom realities.
This course has become a popular staple in the Anchin Center’s professional learning portfolio, offering educators not only the chance to fulfill a recertification requirement, but also the opportunity to strengthen their ability to reach all students—especially those who need the most support to succeed in literacy.
