Ph.D. in Counselor Education
USF’s Ph.D. program in Counselor Education is designed for master’s-level counselors interested in pursuing doctoral study focused on the development of advanced research skills, clinical supervision competence, and teaching practice. The doctoral major places primary emphasis on research rather than clinical skill development and is intended for students seeking careers in academic institutions.
What you will learn
911±¬ÁÏÍø develop advanced research competencies, gain formal training in clinical supervision, and refine teaching practices grounded in counselor education. Through a combination of core coursework, research methods, and a student-selected cognate area, students learn to design scholarly studies, contribute to the counseling knowledge base, and prepare future counseling professionals. The program emphasizes inquiry, evidence-based practice, and leadership in counselor education.

What to Expect
The CACREP-aligned program consists of a minimum of 60 credit hours of blended coursework (online, hybrid, and in-person) across core counselor education, research, a student-selected cognate, and dissertation hours. This selective and intensive program may be completed on a part-time or full-time basis. Full-time students can typically expect to complete the program within three years of matriculation. The program enrolls approximately 5–7 students each year. Applications are due by February 15, and interviews typically occur in mid-March.

Student Learning Outcomes
These outcomes reflect the knowledge and skills expected from graduates of the PhD in Counselor Education in the five professional roles as outlined by CACREP. Upon completion of their PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision, students will:
- Counseling: Integrate counseling theories and evidence-based practices to provide ethical and culturally responsive interventions across diverse settings.
- Supervision: Develop and apply a personal supervision model that adapts to supervisee developmental levels, supervision modalities, evaluative processes, and culturally responsive strategies.
- Teaching: Create a teaching philosophy based on evidence-supported theory and practices and demonstrate competency in designing and implementing culturally supportive teaching methods, including online formats.
- Research- Conduct quantitative and qualitative research relevant to counseling and its specialty areas and disseminate scholarly work through publications and presentations.
- Advocacy and Leadership: Exhibit knowledge and skills in counselor leadership applicable to higher education, professional associations, and counseling environments and develop competency to influence systemic change in the counseling field at individual, professional, and policy levels.

The mission of the Counselor Education Ph.D. program aims to shape the future of counseling by producing visionary practitioners, counselors, community leaders, and educators who are immersed in a climate of scholarly inquiry and prepared to extend the knowledge base of the counseling profession through various professional roles, including teaching, supervision, research, counseling, leadership, and advocacy.

Admission Requirements
- A master’s degree from an accredited university in counseling or a closely related professional field
- A current résumé or curriculum vitae outlining relevant counseling experience, education, teaching or professional work, publications, and presentations
- Three references from individuals who can speak to the applicant’s academic or professional abilities and potential for success in a doctoral program
- A strong academic record demonstrating readiness for doctoral-level study in counselor education
- A personal statement and interview with program faculty; writing samples and additional work references may be requested
