Disaster Preparedness App for Older Adults and Caregivers
Natural disasters disproportionately impact elderly populations, who, despite being a small fraction of the population, often account for the majority of deaths during events like hurricanes. Recognizing that caregivers are frequently overwhelmed and that traditional resources inadequately address the unique needs of older adults and those with disabilities, our team developed the Disaster Preparedness App. The purpose of the application is to provide a robust, guided web platform that empowers older adults and their caregivers to create a comprehensive and highly personalized disaster preparedness plan. The app simplifies the often-stressful planning process into a manageable, step-by-step wizard that saves progress and helps ease user overwhelm.
Key features include:
- Personalized Risk Assessment: The app integrates external APIs to provide real-time, location-based risk data, including assessing flood risk for a specific address using FEMA data and calculating travel times to evacuation destinations.
- AI-Powered Support: An integrated chatbot, trained specifically on disaster preparedness information, provides users with instant, context-aware assistance.
- Florida-Specific Guidance: To provide tailored guidance, the app automatically gives Florida residents a direct link to their local county鈥檚 emergency management website, ensuring access to the most accurate local information.
- Customized PDF Plan: After completing the workflow, the app dynamically generates a personalized PDF plan based on the user's answers. The final plan is stored securely and can be emailed directly to the user and others for easy access.
