Research

My scholarly research focuses on leveraging the strengths of anthropology for both leading universities and understanding university leadership. Among my research projects, I have applied anthropological theory and methods to understand how associate deans learn to perform their administrative role and adjust to their changed positionality in the university. I have also investigated how anthropological ethics, methods, and skills are applied to academic administration. I seek to improve faculty-administrator relations to strengthen our universities while demonstrating the value and impact of applied anthropology. Resulting peer-reviewed publications can be found in Journal of Higher Education Policy and Management, Journal of Educational Administration and History, Annals of Anthropological Practice, Human Organization, and Learning and Teaching.

I am currently leading the inaugural program of the Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA) James H. McDonald Leadership Endowment. This leadership development program aims to strengthen anthropology’s position in higher education by enhancing the institutional knowledge and leadership skills of anthropology faculty.
