Designing Scenario-Based Practice
Strategy: Use AI to Support Scenario-Based Practice and Multimodal Skill Development
Artificial Intelligence can be leveraged to support the design of scenario-based learning and multimodal practice opportunities in skill-focused courses. By combining AI-supported content creation with AI-generated voiceovers, instructors can create realistic, accessible learning experiences that allow students to practice core professional skills, engage with varied perspectives, and connect abstract concepts to applied scenarios.

GEY 4360 – Counseling for Older Adults
In GEY 4360 Counseling for Older Adults, Instructor Amy Corbin partnered with Learning
Designer Marta Slaughter to enhance students’ opportunities to practice core counseling
microskills through scenario-based learning, concept checks, and multimodal instructional
content. The course emphasizes essential counseling skills such as building rapport,
using open and closed questions, paraphrasing, reflecting feelings, and summarizing.
ChatGPT was used to help draft an initial framework for activities and prompts, which
was then refined collaboratively with the instructor. The instructor tested and adjusted
the prompts and ultimately defined how students would submit their work. An alignment
review also identified opportunities to strengthen connections between learning outcomes
and existing scenario-based concept checks. AI was used to assist in drafting additional
scenarios and questions, which were then refined to reflect greater applicability
and local relevance (such as ethics scenarios connected to flooding events).
To support consistency and engagement in narrated lectures, ElevenLabs, an AI voice-over
generation tool, was used to select a consistent narration voice for lectures and
additional voices for scenario-based concept checks. These varied voices helped bring
case examples to life and better reflect the wide range of older adults represented
in the course.

Digital Learning Designer Tips
- For the role-play activity, test the scenario, analyze, refine, test again, and finalize. Add additional context or optional cues to help guide the activity. Include a reflection prompt.
- Provide limited samples for the faculty to select voiceover (in this case I chose 3 male / 3 female examples).
- Be aware of the character limits when using a voice over tool. I recommend reading and re-reading your script to identify any errors first.
- For scenarios, refine your prompts to broaden perspectives or narrow the focus or location.
