Course Production Efficiency

Improving Content Descriptions

Strategy: Use AI to Add Context and Clarity to Instructional Media

Artificial Intelligence can be used to enhance the learner experience by providing concise, contextual descriptions for instructional media. By adding brief, well-written summaries to lecture videos, instructors can help students better understand what to expect, how content connects to course themes, and why each lecture matters—supporting clarity, accessibility, and quality course design standards.

ANT 2511 – Biological Anthropology

In ANT 2511 – Biological Anthropology, Dr. Elizabeth Miller (College of Arts and Sciences) partnered with Digital Learning Designer Janine to improve learner comprehension and navigation by adding contextual descriptions to lecture videos.

Previously, students had access to instructor-recorded lectures hosted on YouTube without accompanying descriptions, which made it difficult for learners to anticipate content and understand how each lecture fit into the broader course structure. To address this, MagicSchool was used to generate brief, one- to two-sentence descriptions for each lecture video. These descriptions were reviewed in collaboration with the instructor to ensure disciplinary accuracy, clarity, and alignment with course learning goals.

Digital Learning Designer Tips

  1. Always confirm AI-generated descriptions to ensure accuracy, clarity, and relevance within the discipline.
  2. When working with MagicSchool, paste the YouTube link directly into the YouTube Video Summarizer tool and ensure you are logged in with a teacher account to access full functionality.
