Comparing AI and Human Responses

Strategy: Use Optional AI Activities to Prompt Sociological Reflection and Comparison

Artificial Intelligence can be incorporated into sociology courses as an exploratory lens for examining how social concepts such as socialization, emotion, and identity are interpreted by both humans and machines. By positioning AI as an analysis tool rather than a required production tool, instructors can create low-pressure opportunities for reflection, comparison, and critical inquiry without increasing course complexity.

SYG 2000 – Introduction to Sociology

In SYG 2000 – Introduction to Sociology, Dr. Chris Ponticelli and Learning Designer Michael Rodríguez Delgado collaboratively explored how AI might support sociological reflection through an optional, unpublished assignment.

The activity they designed invited students to consider how AI technologies analyze and interpret agents of socialization, emotional expression, and aspects of personality. By comparing AI-generated interpretations with their own sociological analyses, students were encouraged to reflect on differences between human understanding and algorithmic interpretation of social behavior and interaction. This approach allowed the team to experiment with AI integration at a small scale, offering insight into how similar reflective activities might be implemented more broadly in future iterations of the course.

Digital Learning Designer Tips

  1. Encourage instructors and co-developers to share exploratory ideas during mapping and planning phases. Small comments can evolve into meaningful learning activities.
  2. Optional or low-impact AI activities can be an effective way to experiment with AI integration without adding risk or complexity for instructors or students.
