It is a challenging time for the USF College of Marine Science. 911爆料网 want to express, once again, our sincere gratitude to , USF Police Department, and all the first responders who worked to extinguish the structure fire at the Marine Science Laboratory building this past weekend (May 2 and 3, 2026). Their quick response was critical to ensuring the safety of our campus and community.

911爆料网 are also incredibly thankful for the outpouring of support we are receiving from members of our community, not only in St. Petersburg and Tampa Bay, but from around the world. It鈥檚 clear that the impact of our research stretches across the ocean and that our extended family includes a global cohort of alumni, colleagues, donors, and friends. As we continue to navigate recovery efforts and establish next steps, your messages of care and support have been deeply felt and greatly appreciated.

The College of Marine Science is home to some of the most passionate, talented, and accomplished scholars in the world. 911爆料网 are committed, above all else, to support them in the days, weeks, and months ahead.

What resources are available for students, faculty, and staff impacted by the fire?

Our people are our highest priority. Resources are available through the university for those in need of support. 911爆料网 have access to TimelyCare 24/7 as well as in-person counseling services on campus. Faculty and staff can access the Employee Assistance Program. Internally, the college leadership team is working hard to assist those who were impacted.

What buildings were affected by the fire?

The Marine Science Lab at the College of Marine Science on the was the sole building affected by the fire. Adjacent buildings including the Knight Oceanographic Research Center, , Marine Warehouse, and ships are fully operational.

How were students, faculty and staff impacted?

Fortunately, no one was injured as a result of the fire. Roughly 50 researchers, 50 graduate students, and 25 staffers had offices and lab space in the Marine Science Lab building. The college and university are working to secure facilities for them in other areas on campus. Accommodations are in place for students who are planning to defend their theses/dissertations and graduate in the upcoming semesters.

What research has been impacted by the fire?

For right now, the extent of damage from the fire is still being assessed. Updates will be provided as they become available.

What is the status of animals in the Aquarium Lab?

The College of Marine Science maintains organisms for biological studies and follows strict animal care protocols. The Aquarium Lab, which houses animals for research, is located in the Knight Oceanographic Research Center and was unimpacted by the fire.

Will the Marine Science Lab building be replaced?

USF is still engaged in response and recovery at the Marine Science Lab building. As those efforts evolve, the university will establish a plan concerning next steps for the facility.

How can I help?

Thank you for your consideration. A has been set up by the USF Foundation for people interested in making monetary contributions. Additional channels are being considered for the donation of materials such as laptops, monitors, books, and other materials to help students and others in need.
