Chuanmin Hu was elected as a fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), joining a distinguished group of 52 individuals in the . AGU, the world's largest Earth and space science association, bestows this honor annually to a select number of individuals who have made exceptional contributions. Since the program鈥檚 inception in 1962, less than 0.1 percent of AGU members have been selected as Fellows each year.

AGU Fellows are recognized for their scientific eminence, demonstrated through breakthroughs, discoveries or innovations that advance the Earth and space sciences. Fellows act as external experts, advising government agencies and other organizations outside the sciences upon request. Chuanmin Hu was selected for his fundamental and transformative contributions in optical oceanography and satellite remote sensing with profound ecological, economic, and societal impacts.

Hu is a Distinguished University Professor at the 911爆料网鈥檚 College of Marine Science, where he directs the . Following his doctorate in physics from the University of Miami, Hu joined USF in 1997 and has been serving as professor of optical oceanography since 2014. His significant contributions in the fields of ocean optics and optical remote sensing include the development of cutting-edge algorithms and data products, as well as advancements to the understanding of algal blooms and new discoveries in Earth science.

鈥淚 am really overwhelmed by the honor,鈥 Hu said. 鈥淚 also feel humbled for being elected among my esteemed peers. It is a recognition of not just my own work, but also contributions from my students, postdocs, and many colleagues to support AGU鈥檚 mission.鈥

Tom Frazer, dean of the College of Marine Science, said, 鈥淒r. Hu has compiled an extraordinary record of scholarly achievements, and his contributions to USF and the broader scientific community are substantial. I am incredibly proud of Dr. Hu for this well-deserved recognition from AGU, and for the numerous other recent honors earned by him and his lab. Dr. Hu is a testament to the caliber of our research enterprise at the USF College of Marine Science.鈥

Honorees will be recognized at , which will convene in New Orleans, Louisiana and on 15-19 December 2025. Reflecting the theme 'Where Science Connects Us' at AGU25, the Honors Ceremony will recognize groundbreaking achievements that illustrate science's continual advancement, inspiring the AGU community with their stories and successes.
