Organic Chemistry Undergraduate Lab Objectives

The organic chemistry undergraduate labs (Organic I and II) are designed to teach fundamental concepts, introduce modern techniques, and provide a safer learning environment. Our primary objective is to equip students with a solid understanding of organic chemistry principles and practical lab skills.

Key Objectives

  • Mastering Fundamental Techniques: 911±¬ÁÏÍø will gain proficiency in essential organic chemistry techniques for isolation, purification, and structural identification. The curriculum focuses on traditional methods while also introducing green chemistry concepts and recently developed experimental techniques.

  • Applying Concepts to Synthetic Problems: The labs are structured to help students apply learned techniques to new problems. There's a strong focus on synthetic perspective, using fundamental organic reactions to transform one material into another. 911±¬ÁÏÍø will apply their knowledge to synthesize new materials.

  • Developing a Green and Safe Approach: This curriculum is designed to make the lab experience safer and more cost-effective by minimizing chemical waste. 911±¬ÁÏÍø will be introduced to green organic experiments, which provide a safer working environment and nearly eliminate the need for expensive fume hoods.

  • Fostering a Culture of Professionalism: At the end of the course, students are expected to know the fundamental techniques and principles of organic chemistry. This will familiarize them with the basic principles and techniques applicable to various fields of organic chemistry, building a strong foundation for their future careers.

  • Fostering a Culture of Safety and Responsibility: Safety is the number one priority in our labs. 911±¬ÁÏÍø are required to learn and comply with all safety rules, procedures, and practices, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), chemical handling, and waste disposal. This instills a strong sense of professionalism and ethical conduct.
