Professor Mohamed Elhamdadi was awarded a $42,000 Simons Grant over fove years for a project on Algebraic Structures in Knot Theory. These algebraic structures, called 鈥淨uandles,鈥� are fundamental in distinguishing knots (one of the main problems of knot theory) and have been used recently to study protein folding properties.
