Holy Trinity Orthodox Church

The Institute for Digital Exploration (IDEx) has led a comprehensive program of 3D digitization, digital curation, and immersive public outreach for the in Clearwater, Florida, a landmark rebuilt after the 2015 fire and renowned for its rich mosaics, frescoes, marbles, and iconography. IDEx’s work combines high-precision terrestrial laser scanning and 360° photography to produce a metrically accurate 3D model of the church interior, integrated with the design of a relational database linking individual icons and artworks to artists and donors.

Building on these digital assets, IDEx developed an annotated, media-rich virtual tour accessible on desktop, mobile, and virtual-reality platforms, using digital storytelling (text, images, audio, and video in English ) to enhance interpretation, accessibility, and global engagement. The project also includes innovative 3D-printing applications, such as scaled altar models and tactile, extruded icons for visitors with visual or cognitive impairments, demonstrating how advanced digital heritage methodologies can support preservation, donor recognition, education, and inclusive access while strengthening the church’s long-term digital presence.
