Partnership
Florida Institute for Forensic Anthropology & Applied Science

Since 2024, the Institute for Digital Exploration (IDEx) launched a formal collaboration with the Florida Institute of Forensic Anthropology & Applied Science (IFAAS) to advance research and instruction through high-resolution 3D digitization and enhanced visualization of human skeletal remains. Conceived as a proof-of-concept to support external funding initiatives, the project focuses on the complete 3D documentation of donor skeletons the IFAAS collection using a hybrid workflow that combined structured-light 3D scanning (Artec Spider) and laser scanning (Faro ScanArm). This multi-technology approach enabled a comparative analysis of pathological lesions while producing complementary 3D models optimized for different accuracy and visualization needs.
The project also had a strong pedagogical component: cohorts of USF students complete an intensive 20-hour training in 3D capture and processing and subsequently 3D digitizing 169 bone specimens. Led IDEx and IFAAS staff member, Aiden Eylward, who supervised scanning operations, quality control, and hands-on workshops on ethical handling of human remains, the initiative results in complete, high-fidelity digital skeletons preserving both structural and pathological features. Beyond its immediate research and teaching value, the project refined scalable workflows for future digitization campaigns and established a benchmark for integrating advanced 3D technologies into forensic anthropology, reinforcing the role of digital preservation in expanding access, reproducibility, and long-term stewardship of skeletal collections.

Additionallly IDEx offers technological assistance to IFAAS for the Forensic Anthropology workshops organized by the Institute.
